Are Dental Veneers Procedure Changes Reversible?

Dental veneers are often perceived as an irreversible and permanent procedure, but that is not always completely accurate. While it is important to understand the process involved in the application of dental veneers, it is equally as important to understand what your options for dental procedures will be after you have had your veneers applied. In this article, we will discuss how dental veneers are applied and why they are considered a permanent cosmetic dental procedure, despite being removable.

Uses of dental veneers

Dental veneers are an amazing solution for patients looking to improve the cosmetic appearance of their smile. Veneers are thin shells custom designed to mimic the shape, color and texture of real teeth. They are a fairly painless and non-invasive method of correcting discoloration and other cosmetic dental flaws. Veneers are long-lasting, strong and stain resistant, making them a favorite among perfect-smile seekers everywhere.

Reversing dental veneers

While dental veneers are a great way to improve your smile, time and consideration should be put into the decision to move forward with this kind of procedure. An important element of dental veneers to consider is the method of application. In order to apply veneers, your dentist will often need to remove the outer layer of enamel or reshape/restructure the tooth prior to application.

The removal and prepping of the tooth for porcelain veneers is the step of this process that makes them irreversible. You cannot return enamel to a tooth once it has been removed nor can you reshape or return a tooth to its original form. Dental veneers can, of course, be removed, but the options for what to do after removal are fairly limited. In almost all cases, once a dental veneer has been removed, it must be replaced with a new veneer to prevent damage to the exposed tooth and preserve the look of your smile.

Non-permanent veneers

Besides traditional porcelain veneers mentioned above, there are other, less permanent options. Clip-on or non-prep veneers that require minimal structural tooth change are available but may not produce the same results. If you are considering veneers but are not sure whether you are ready to commit, you may want to explore clip-on or non-prep veneers.

While non-permanent veneers may not give you the same flawless results as permanent veneers applied by your dentist, they are a great option for anyone looking to improve their smile without the commitment. Consult your dentist about the best options for you and your smile. You may find that permanent veneers will be the most ideal option for you and your lifestyle, or you may learn that another dental procedure may yield better and more satisfactory results.
