CEREC : The Steps for Getting a Single Day Crown

Cerec Brevard, NC

You may have heard about CEREC® crowns, but you might not realize how easy it is to get one. Your dentist can help you determine if you are a good candidate for a CEREC crown. It only takes a few steps to create a custom-fit crown. Surprisingly, the CEREC technology has been around for decades. These crowns are different from traditional crowns, and you could walk out of the dentist’s office with a new, permanent crown in just one visit. Here are the steps for getting a single-day CEREC crown.

The latest CEREC technology

CEREC is an acronym for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. The dentist will take a digital photo of the damaged tooth. That digital image helps the computer-assisted device (CAD) create the specifications for the crown. Specialized equipment uses the measurements captured by the camera and computer program. The computer-assisted machinery (CAM) creates a crown from a block of ceramic.

A small work of art

The computer-assisted machinery mills each CEREC crown from a block of ceramic. The digital measurements allow for accurate shaping. But the crown is not finished yet. After milling, the dentist will paint the ceramic tooth the same shade as the other teeth in the patient’s mouth. A finishing glaze completes the crown. The dentist may also polish the crown to create a more comfortable bite.

Fast work for lengthy results

The process of creating and installing a CEREC crown is fast. It only takes a few moments for the equipment to create the custom crown. The entire appointment from photos to finish should take two hours at most. People walk out of the dentist’s office with a permanent crown the same day.

Very different from traditional crowns

The process for installing traditional crowns is very different. The dentist must take an impression of the tooth that needs a crown. This can be very messy. The dentist sends the impression out to a lab, which creates a crown. The entire process can take two weeks or more and multiple visits to the dentist. In the meantime, patients often must wear an uncomfortable temporary crown.

CEREC crowns will last

Unlike many traditional crowns, the CEREC crown has no metal component. This also makes the crown appear more like a real tooth. The dentist uses a bonding material to fix the crown to the tooth. With care, the CEREC crown can last as long as a traditional crown. A great oral hygiene routine and avoiding very hard and brittle items can extend the life of CEREC crowns even further. Fewer visits to the dentist for new crowns mean that the patient saves both time and money.

A few simple steps with a CEREC crown

Everyone likes to save time and find convenient ways to solve a problem. Getting a CEREC crown can help you restore your smile and your oral health in a single dentist visit. When your dentist uses CEREC technology, you get a custom-made crown that looks natural and is a permanent solution. Your dentist can discuss the steps for getting a single-day crown and if CEREC is a good option for you.
