Is CEREC® a Traditional Crown? Differences You Need to Know

CEREC® dental crowns are a rather new but extremely popular restoration option used for repairing and renewing damaged teeth. They offer the same goal that traditional dental crowns do; however, they come with many differences, including what they actually are, how they are made and how the process works. Because there are a few notable differences between CEREC® dental crowns and traditional ones, it is important to review the details prior to deciding on a type of dental crown.
CEREC® dental crowns versus traditional dental crowns
Below is an overview of both CEREC® dental crowns and traditional ones, including the differences, which are important to know.
CEREC® dental crowns
CEREC® stands for the chairside economical restoration of esthetic ceramic, which in reference to dental crowns, means ceramic dental crowns that are made chairside in an economical fashion. CEREC® relies on CAD/CAM technology, which is computer-aided design and manufacturing. In simpler terms, this means that dental crowns are made through a computer-based machine right in the dentist's office. The machine takes digital impressions and then creates the crown from a block of ceramic.
Traditional dental crowns
Unlike CEREC® dental crowns, traditional ones are not made chairside or in a dentist's office. Instead, they are made in a dental lab over the course of a week or two. They require physical impressions to be made, which requires a separate appointment. Additionally, CEREC® dental crowns are made only in ceramic, whereas traditional ones are offered in a wide variety of materials, including gold, metal alloys, composite resin and porcelain.
Which to choose
Both CEREC® and traditional dental crowns offer patients the same goal, which is a healthy and durable restoration. However, because the process is much different, many wonder if there are any benefits to choosing one over the other.
CEREC® dental crowns can be made much quicker than that of traditional ones. Instead of having to wait a couple of weeks and attend multiple appointments for a traditional dental crown, patients can visit their dentist and get their CEREC® crown placed in just one appointment. This is the main benefit that comes with CEREC® dental crowns.
On the flip side, traditional dental crowns offer the benefit of choice and variation. Some patients want options when considering a dental restoration. There are benefits to every material option, which is what makes traditional crowns desirable. Some people may prefer gold because it is extremely durable, while others may want porcelain because it is white in color. When choosing a traditional dental crown, patients can carefully consider each material to determine what may be best for them.
